CX-5 vs. Venza: Sporty Sophistication

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is a right-sized 5-passenger compact SUV available with several trim options, two engine choices, and i-Activ all-wheel drive (AWD) now standard throughout the lineup. In other words, it offers plenty of choice for a variety of drivers.

Buyers can choose from two 2.5-liter engines. The base naturally aspirated inline-4 delivers 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine and you’ll see 227 horsepower with regular fuel and 250 hp with 93 octane. Torque checks in at a solid 310 lb-ft.

All powertrains are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Mazda intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive). The CX-5 Turbo receives additional styling enhancements to further distinguish it from non-turbo models.

Among the styling changes is a new front fascia that uses a 3D texture instead of mesh and a modified wing that frames the lower half of the grille. The headlamps feature a new look that incorporates rectangular LED lighting elements.

Inside, an all-new 10.3-inch display is now standard, replacing the previous 7.0-inch screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, too. Mazda adds new body-colored trim around wheelwells and rocker panels, a 360-degree camera, rear automated emergency braking, and a driver-attention alert feature to the Turbo Signature model.

A comprehensive list of active safety features is included on all trims. Among them are automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Toyota Venza

With sleek coupe-like styling, the 2022 Toyota Venza boasts standard all-wheel drive to go with its hybrid powertrain. That setup includes a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle inline-4 engine coupled with a pair of electric motors (one for each axle). The result is 219 horsepower of peak power from the gasoline / electric combo. Toyota estimates you’ll see fuel economy ratings of 40 city/37 highway mpg.

The Venza’s AWD drivetrain works primarily in an on-demand fashion. Most of it is sent to the front wheels but can be diverted to the rear when more traction is needed. The electric motors provide a welcomed boost of acceleration, which is especially desirable when entering a highway or passing slower vehicles. The drivetrain is not rated for towing.

The 2022 Venza is available in base LE, XLE, and Limited trim levels. The Venza’s interior offers comfortable seating and a roomier cabin, although cargo space is limited to 28.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats.

Standard features include an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Toyota’s standard Safety Sense 2.0 safety tech package features adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and pre-collision mitigation.
